Spiritual Practices That Increase Business Potential

I’ve always been a spiritual person. One who believes not only in the transformative power of the mind and positive thinking, but that there is a greater good working in our favour.  My whole career as you may know, was launched on a chance meeting that I don’t believe to be a coincidence. And I have forged a successful business through following my gut instinct. The intrinsic belief I had that I really could make a career out of organising other people’s events, even though nobody else was doing that at the time. So for me, spiritual practices that increase business potential are intrinsic to my success, and yours.

“If my mind can conceive it and my heart can believe it – then I can achieve it.” Mohammed Ali

Every step along the way of that thirty-year career, I have relied in most instances, on feeling over thought. On intuition over what others tell me is the sensible thing to do. It has served me well in business.

Spiritual practises can not only help you to be more decisive and increase confidence, but they can also help you to find the positive in every situation and in doing so, it usually follows that positive thoughts, create positive reactions. Oprah Winfrey, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Arianna Huffington and Goldie Hawn are just some of the uber successful people who use spiritual practices to increase their business potential. So, if you’re looking for inspiration, there is plenty to be found. From visualisation to mindfulness and meditation, here are just some of the spiritual practices that can be used to increase business potential.

VISUALISATION

This is the big one!

Where some spiritual techniques are regarded as mere placebo or worse – nonsense, visualisation has been scientifically proven to improve success. Athletes, surgeons, police, politicians, actors and business leaders have all publicly hailed the virtues of visualisation.

There are teams of people who work with Olympians on sports psychology, harnessing the power of the mind and positive thinking. Visualisation is the primary technique used by many of these therapists and can be the all-important difference between a bronze and gold medal.

Scientists too believe strongly in the power of visualisation. It is used among some healthcare professionals as an effective stress management tool. Studies revealed that newly qualified surgeons who visualised themselves succeeding were significantly less stressed than their counterparts.

If you want to use visualisation in your business, then all you need is your imagination and a goal that you would like to achieve. Then simply put aside ten minutes a day and visualise yourself achieving it.

THE LAW OF ATTRACTION

The Law of Attraction is really no different to goal setting. With the phrase ‘fake it until you make it’ thrown in for good measure. Whatever you choose to call it there are certainly some high-profile advocates. The basic principle is that we can attract anything in life that we desire. If you want something, all you have to do is ask the universe, then act as though you already have it.

You may have heard about actor Jim Carey, who wrote himself a cheque for ‘acting services rendered’. The value was $10million and he dated it a decade into the future. Around ten years later he was cast as the lead in Dumb and Dumber for which he received the princely amount of £10million dollars. Coincidence? Maybe. But there are certainly some things to learn through his story when trying to forge a successful career.

Jim Carey didn’t just sit on his laurels waiting for a casting director to come knocking on his door. He took real world action. He set his goal and moved hell and earth to reach it. The purpose of the cheque was to keep him focused on the goal.

Perhaps there is a force in play, that once we set our intentions helps us to achieve them, but I firmly believe that if there is, we have to meet the universe halfway.

MINDFULNESS AND MEDITATION

A favourite of Arnold Schwarzenegger and something I can certainly get on board with. Meditation and mindfulness are both fantastic ways to relieve stress and reset the mind.

Where meditation focuses on clearing the mind of conscious thought, mindfulness promotes living in the moment and appreciating the here and now.

Meditation has been scientifically shown to alleviate depression, high blood pressure, pain and anxiety, to name a few conditions. It positively affects the part of the brain responsible for memory, learning, decision-making and fear response. A brilliant tool for business.

Mindfulness on the other hand, can help you to take risks and push yourself to bigger and better things in a business situation. Very often fear is what holds us back. The what ifs and the anticipation of taking the next step stop us from taking it. However, through living in the moment and taking one step at a time, we can actually push ourselves out of our comfort zone and take our business with us.

Both can significantly reduce stress reactions and help us cope in tense situations. And that’s great news for business leaders.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

The correlation between physical exercise and mental health are well documented but studies have also found that exercise can make you more creative. I have had some of my best ideas while pounding out the miles on the treadmill, but what I have also found is that it is easier to see those ideas through to reality when I look after my physical health.

Every year (well in normal years) I head off to Portugal or Turkey for an intense detox and yoga retreat. It resets and rebalances my mind, body and spirit. It’s a practise that I will long continue, as inevitably when I return from that break something miraculous happens in my business. In clearing my mind and body and looking after the physical, I somehow seem to make way for new and exciting ventures in my life.

GRATITUDE

The final spiritual practise to increase business potential is gratitude. Expressing gratitude both to ourselves and to others can increase overall mood, switch our brains to a more positive outlook and increase job satisfaction.

Gratitude makes our mundane meaningful. And let’s face it, we’re all striving to feel like we’re making a difference in some way. If you start to find the positive in small achievements, you very quickly find they add up to big ones.

Gratitude can be life-changing and transformational in business.
